This Bible Reading/Study plan will guide our church in reading through the whole Bible in chronological order together this year. The simple plan outlined below will help you get the most out of your daily Bible reading. You can complete this by spending 15- 20 minutes a day reading the Bible and writing about what God speaks to you. Or you may choose to read only the New Testament or only the Old Testament this year, and read the other testament next year. All you need is a daily time and place, a Bible in a version that you understand, a pen, and a journal or notebook.

Matthew 13:23 says, “The one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.” If we want to understand God’s Word and be fruitful it is helpful to pause in our reading to dig deeper and apply it to our personal lives. “Be doers of the Word, and not merely hearers.“ (James 1:22 )

S - Sow the Word in your heart with prayer.
Ask the Lord to teach and refresh you as you read and study. “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your word.” (Psalm 119:18)

O - Observation: What does it say?
Find out what it says objectively, before you try to find out what it means, or how to apply it subjectively.
• Ask these questions? Who? What? Where? When? Why? How?
• Identify the type of literature (historical, biographical, poetic, proverbial, prophetic, epistle) because this determines how you will handle it.

I - Interpretation: What does it mean?
• Identify and highlight key and repeated words and phrases.
• Summarize the passage; write down the themes and big ideas.
• Find comparisons and contrasts.
• Look up key words in a Bible dictionary or concordance to increase your understanding.

L - Life Application: How can I apply this to my life? Look for
• an example to follow
• a command or exhortation to obey
• thought or doctrine to embrace
• attitude to change, warning to heed
• promise to claim
• meaningful scripture verse to meditate on or memorize
